The Old Way
In medieval times pilgrims would have used a combination of tracks and routes to travel to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The Old Way was believed to be a route followed by pilgrims heading to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket in Canterbury. The route takes in some of the oldest tracks in Britain and travels over a varied landscape including the coast, woodland, river valleys, downland and rolling hills. The British Pilgrimage Trust has developed the route using Britain’s oldest map, the Gough map of around 1360 AD with the aim of reflecting medieval pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket.
