Queens and Saints:
Royal Canterbury Caminos

These are three pilgrimage routes created to celebrate the powerful women of the Kentish Royal family in the early years of post-Roman Christianity.

The key women are as follows:

  • Queen Bertha at Canterbury, the Merovingian princess sent over as 'soft power' to convert the pagan King Ethelbert.

  • Saint Ethelburga (their daughter) at Lyminge.

  • Saint Eanswythe (their granddaughter) at Folkestone.

  • Saint Sexburga (their granddaughter-in-law), at Minster in Sheppey.

  • Saint Eadburg (great granddaughter), at Minster in Thanet.

  • Saint Mildred (their great-great-granddaughter).

The three routes are,

Royal Saxon Way - Folkestone to Minster via Elham and Patrixbourne (58 km)

The Royal Kentish Camino - Folkestone to Canterbury (37 km)

The Shepherds Isle Camino - Canterbury to the Isle of Sheppey (72 km)

These wonderful new pilgrimage routes were created by Rob and Diane Baldwin and you can find more information at the web address below.
