The Pilgrims' Way
The Pilgrims' Way is a combination of ancient routes between Winchester and Canterbury. These ancient routes became famous when pilgrims started to make their way to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket in around 1200 AD. Following the chalk ridgeway out of Winchester in the West and taking in the North Downs. The journey to the Shrine of Saint Thomas Becket became the most important pilgrimages up until the reformation in 1538 AD. Pilgrimage has been revived in modern times with renewed interest in pilgrimage to Canterbury.
When you start at Winchester, ask for a blessing in St Alphege chapel where you will find a stone Canterbury Cross on the wall as a nice touch point to us here, to start your journey.
